December 29, 1982 began like any other winter morning in northern Alberta. But when they laid a tiny bundle in my arms early that afternoon, I knew my life would never be the same again. Six more children were born to us through the years. But there is something special about the firstborn child. As I gazed into her wonderful blue eyes and nuzzled her fuzzy blonde head, I prayed that Ian and I would be all she needed in a mother and father.
Any parent knows it is not easy raising a child. Much love, watchfulness, patience, joy and a few tears, are all part of life with children. Nothing happens overnight. Everything takes faith and diligence. Little by little, line upon line, precept upon precept… moment by moment, day by day, year by year…. And one day you look into the eyes of the young man or woman your child has become, and you wonder where the time went.
Our daughter has been through a lot in her young life, especially in the last seven years with the loss of first her brother, and then her husband. I am amazed as I see the love and grace of God as He works in her life. As I observe her handling of some of life’s most difficult circumstances, I know that that prayer, so often repeated through the years, has been answered. Not because of how great we are as parents, but because of God and HIS wonderful love for her and for all of us.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, IRENE!!
