The Old Rugged Cross

George Bennard

George Bennard

This evening our son Timothy, recently graduated from Mount Carmel Bible College, was asked to lead our evening worship service. For our closing hymn, he chose an old favourite, “The Old Rugged Cross”.

It was written by George Bennard in 1912, as a response to ridicule he had received at a revival meeting.

This beautiful rendition is sung by Guy Penrod.

GuyPenrodGuy Penrod is well-known to millions, but relatively unknown to me. I’ve never listened to the Gaithers, so I didn’t know him from there. I think I stumbled upon Guy Penrod one day when I was doing a search for the book, Penrod, by Booth Tarkington!

I was interested to note that in addition to our faith in the Lord, we share a number of other things in common. He and his wife have been married for over 30 years, they live out in the country, and they have 8 children, all of whom are homeschooled.

  3. I LOVE The Old Rugged Cross. I still remember being a child and singing this at church with my dad. He would do the bass and I was alto. Brings a smile to my face 🙂

  4. The Old Rugged Cross hold special meaning to me. As one of the first songs I learned to sing, it is also my late husband’s favorite. In fact, he asked me to sing it at his funernal, which I was not emotionally able to do.

I love Guy Penrod’s voice, along with the rest of the Gaither Vocal Band. If you haven’t heard Carrie Underwood sing the Old Rugged Cross, look it up on YouTube. I guarantee you it will give you goosebumps!

    • Kelli, I didn’t know you’d lost your husband. 🙁 I know what you mean about not being able to sing the hymn for him… I lost my first husband when I was 25, just two years after we were married. I asked my friend, who had sung at our wedding, if she would sing at his funeral. She wanted to, but said no because she didn’t think she could get through it without breaking down.

I looked for Carrie Underwood’s rendition of The Old Rugged Cross, but couldn’t find it. I found others by her, but not that one. I’ll keep looking.
